In a departure from traditional classroom dynamics, Professor Mendis brings a touch of real-world magic to HSB. His engaging talk transcends the ordinary, offering students a unique opportunity to glean insights from a seasoned diplomat who has seamlessly transitioned from handshakes to whiteboards.

During his lecture, Professor A. Saj U. Mendis shared a treasure trove of knowledge on negotiation, drawing upon his extensive diplomatic experience. Delving into the intricacies of negotiation techniques, he wove a narrative of wisdom cultivated through his global diplomatic endeavors. What makes this lecture even more special is Professor Mendis’s emphasis on the transferability of these skills. He expertly illustrated how negotiation techniques are not confined to diplomatic circles but are practical tools applicable in both the private and public sectors.

From earning a Ph.D. in International Economic Policy to holding the prestigious title of Senior Fellow at Harvard University, Professor Mendis has traversed the globe, bringing a wealth of experience to the familiar Chu Van An Hall of HSB. His unique ability to infuse cheerfulness and artistry into the subject of negotiation has made the learning experience not just insightful but downright enjoyable.

On November 1, 2023, HSB was honored to receive Honorary Professor of Public Policy, Terry F. Buss, to officially participate in teaching and advising programs. training at HSB.

Mr. Buss received his Ph.D. in Political Science and Applied Mathematics from Ohio State University, USA in 1976, and is an Honorary Professor at Urals University of Economics, Russia; Professor Emeritus at the University of Akron, USA; Distinguished Professor of Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, Australia. The recruitment exemplifies HSB’s initiatives to raise the caliber of education and foster global collaboration. HSB will continue to rank this as one of its top strategic priorities to further develop and promote HSB’s global capabilities.

With over 30 years of research experience, Mr. Buss has held a variety of positions and roles in important management and consulting roles, including advisor to the World Bank and the US Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. He has also held management positions in numerous schools and research agencies around the globe, and he has won numerous awards and recognitions, including the Brizius Award for his contributions to the government in the field of policy in 1997, the Outstanding Researcher Award of Year at Suffolk University in 2001, the Thomas R. Dye Award for Outstanding Contribution to National Policy Research Organizations in 2000, and numerous other honors and achievements.

Professor Terry engages in active teaching at numerous colleges across the globe, including Carnegie Mellon University (Australia), Florida International University (Miami), Suffolk University (Boston), University of Akron (Ohio), and others, in addition to his consulting and management work. Professor Terry has extensive experience in scientific research, having worked on many projects in the United States, England, Wales, Australia, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Singapore, Iraq, South Africa, and Vietnam, among other places.

He took part in giving guidance and assistance during the establishment of Fullbright University Vietnam’s School of Management and Public Policy. Furthermore, he is a regular lecturer, consultant, researcher, and commentator who writes a lot of insightful pieces that are frequently featured on well-known Vietnamese news websites including The Courier, Vnexpress, Tuoi Tre, Viet Times, VietnamNet, Voice of Vietnam, Song Viet Magazine, and Defense Magazine. The thematic foundation for this academic interaction resides in the recent elevation of the Vietnam-US diplomatic relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, signifying the initiation of a novel phase in their bilateral collaboration. Mr. Dubrovsky, a highly regarded expert in the realm of international economics and diplomacy, enriched the academic milieu with his profound insights on various subjects.

Bilateral Upgrade

The recent upgrade of Vietnam-US relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership represents a significant milestone, signaling a new chapter in bilateral friendship and cooperation. This upgrade demonstrates the mutual desire to deepen the partnership, with an expanded scope of collaboration across various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and culture. The partnership reflects shared values and goals in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing peace, stability, and prosperity. He discussed the dynamics of foreign investment in Vietnam, emphasizing that investors may not always seek direct permission from local authorities, as universities and other entities maintain their independence. The lecturer expressed optimism about Vietnam’s attractiveness for long-term investments, citing factors such as the country’s dynamic environment, a well-educated population, and global respect. He highlighted the importance of the private sector as the engine for economic growth, explaining that the U.S. places the weight of economic development on private enterprises, which operate independently, identifying opportunities and pursuing them proactively. The role of the government is seen as one that facilitates rather than dictates investments. Due diligence is crucial for companies looking to invest, and they should not rely on the government for directions in this regard.

Indo-Pacific Economic Framework

N?n t?ng tr�� ch?i th? th??ng (HSB), an integral part of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), marked a significant milestone on September 24, 2023, by hosting the “Commencement 2023” graduation ceremony. This event celebrated the inaugural graduates of the Bachelor program in Management of Enterprise and Technology, emphasizing HSB’s commitment to global integration following its attainment of European education quality accreditation.

The Commencement 2023 was a momentous occasion, attended by approximately 140 new bachelors and masters across four programs: Bachelor in Management of Enterprise and Technology, Master in Management of Nontraditional Security, Master of Business Administration (HSB-MBA), and Master of Science in Business Management (MBM). The ceremony garnered participation from over 100 esteemed HSB lecturers, leaders, and staff members, alongside distinguished representatives from various departments in the Vietnam National University.

Distinguished guests from the academic and professional spheres of Vietnam graced the ceremony with their presence, including Colonel General, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Van Nam, former Deputy Minister of Public Security, and Lieutenant General, Professor, Ph.D. Nguyen Xuan Yem, former director of the People’s Police Academy. Additionally, leading businesses and partner organizations collaborating in training, research, and recruitment with HSB, such as Vietnam Electricity Group, Vietnam Petroleum Group, Samsung Display Company, Viettel Group Companies, Goertek Vina, TopCV, and numerous others, also attended the event.

HSB Commencement 2023 Introduction of the Academic Procession

Commencement 2023 showcased HSB’s enduring commitment to its core values and academic principles, with the Academic Procession overseeing the proceedings. The event featured captivating musical performances by HSB students, including a special appearance by guest singer Suni Ha Linh. The highlight of the ceremony was the solemn conferral of degrees upon the new masters and bachelors, conducted by a 14-member Academic Procession comprising leading professors and doctors from HSB and representatives from the academic department, student affairs department of the VNU.

Notably, during the ceremony, Colonel General, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Van Nam presented four pens engraved with his name to four outstanding new graduates, recognizing their exceptional academic achievements, resilience in overcoming challenges, and contributions to school activities. These graduates have not only assimilated specialized knowledge but have also demonstrated emotional intelligence (EQ), a criterion consistently emphasized by HSB in admissions and training activities.

Addressing the gathering, Associate Professor, Ph.D. Hoang Dinh Phi, Rector of HSB, expressed his joy at the ability to hold a graduation ceremony and confer degrees after more than two years of pandemic-related challenges. He extended his best wishes to the new bachelors, masters, and their families, emphasizing that HSB would always be their second home, ready to provide assistance and support whenever needed.

Valedictorian Luong Dang Khanh Luu, the recipient of a 4-year full scholarship, the Bachelor of Management of Enterprise and Technology, conveyed her thoughts at the Graduation Ceremony. She stated, “Today, as we hold our university diplomas, we reap the rewards of four years of dedication and personal growth. Regardless of our paths ahead, let us always remember the core values of HSB students: Health, Ethics, Will, Talent, Love, and Responsibility. These values and the invaluable lessons learned will forever guide us.”

HSB has also gained official membership in the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), one of the world’s top three business school accreditation organizations. As an official member, HSB is set to expand its collaboration with AACSB’s network and is poised for AACSB accreditation in the near future. HSB’s dedication to international integration and its partnership with renowned global educational institutions, such as the University of Queensland (Australia), Massey University (New Zealand), the University of Albany, State of New York (USA), reaffirms its position as a trailblazer in interdisciplinary research and training.
